Most YouTube features are unlocked through phone or ID verification. Only a handful of milestones gate features by subscriber count: 50 for mobile live streaming, 500 for early monetization (memberships, Super Chat, Shopping), 1,000 for ad revenue, and 100,000 for the verification badge and Silver Play Button. In the article below, we feature the full detailed matrix as it is described in YouTube’s current 2026 guidelines.

Features That Don't Require a Subscriber Count
Four of the most-searched YouTube features are gated by verification. Phone verification alone unlocks most of it: uploads longer than 15 minutes, custom thumbnails, live streaming, and the ability to appeal a copyright claim on a brand-new channel with zero subscribers, according to the official verification page.
A second, deeper tier called ‘advanced features’ needs phone verification plus one more thing: enough channel history for YouTube to assess automatically, or ID/video verification for instant access. Advanced features unlock pinned comments, higher daily upload limits, embedded live streams, A/B thumbnail testing, and, as of August 2026, multi-language thumbnails. None of this depends on sub count either.
Community posts don't require 500 subscribers anymore.
This is the single most repeated outdated claim in guides about YouTube. The feature launched in 2016 at a 10,000-subscriber minimum, then dropped to 1,000, then to 500 subscribers in October 2021. YouTube’s current Help Center pages for creating a post, learning about posts, and starting your Community list have no subscriber minimum; they only require access to Advanced features, and the channel isn’t set to ‘Made for Kids’ or run as a supervised account.
If your Community Tab isn’t available after enabling Advanced features, the issue isn’t the subscriber count.
Content ID isn’t tied to a subscriber milestone either. YouTube’s qualification page bases Content ID eligibility on proven exclusive rights to original content and a demonstrated operational need for automated claiming. So, a 50,000-subscriber music label channel with clear exclusive rights can qualify; a 5-million-subscriber reaction channel without exclusive ownership cannot.
Features Unlocked at 50 Subscribers
At 50 subscribers, a channel can go live from the YouTube mobile app for the first time. Below that, mobile live streaming is unavailable; the desktop and webcam paths have no subscriber minimum at all, only phone verification.
There’s a catch worth keeping in mind: between 50 and 1,000 subscribers, YouTube caps how many viewers can watch a mobile live stream as a safety measure. YouTube’s guidelines warn that it can take several weeks after crossing 1,000 subscribers for that cap to lift, so don’t expect it to disappear the moment the counter ticks over.
What Unlocks at 500 Subscribers: Early Access Tier
At 500 subscribers, a channel becomes eligible for the YouTube Partner Program’s Early Access tier, which unlocks Channel Memberships, Super Features, Jewels and gifts, and YouTube Shopping, before the channel can qualify for ad revenue.
Hitting 500 subscribers is only half of what Early Access requires. YouTube also wants at least 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, plus either 3,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months or 3 million public Shorts views in the past 90 days.
A channel can sit at 10,000 subscribers and still miss Early Access if it hasn’t posted in 90 days or never built up watch hours.
1,000 Subscribers Features: Full YPP Access
At 1,000 subscribers, a channel finally becomes eligible for the YouTube Partner Program’s full monetization! That includes a share of Watch Page ad revenue, Shorts Feed ad revenue, and YouTube Premium revenue.
Here, the general rule is the same as the 500-subscriber tier, just with a higher bar: alongside 1,000 subscribers, a channel needs either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
This threshold is changing for new applicants on February 1, 2027.
YouTube announced its first YPP rules overhaul since 2018: new channels applying for Full Monetization will need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 watch hours in 365 days (up from 4,000), or 1,000 subscribers plus 20 million Shorts views in 90 days (up from 10 million). Channels already in YPP keep their current status and aren’t affected by the change. You can read the full breakdown of the 2027 YPP changes here. Hit 1,000 subscribers, but monetization still says "not eligible"?
Subscribers are only half the check; watch hours, Shorts views, and channel history decide the rest. We've walked channels through this exact gap 3,000+ times.
Check what’s missingWhat Unlocks at 10,000 Subscribers
There’s nothing official unlocking at exactly the 10,000-subscriber mark. YouTube has never published a feature tied to that specific number, so there is no ‘expanded Creator Support’; Advanced features cover that. YouTube hasn’t documented a Creator Support tier keyed to 10,000 subscribers either.
What this range actually means for most channels: it’s the stretch between clearing the 500-sub Early Access requirements and reaching the 100,000-subscriber verification badge. By 10,000 subscribers, an actively posting channel has usually cleared its watch-hour or Shorts-view bar for both YPP tiers if it hasn’t already; if ad revenue still isn’t turned on at this size, subscriber count isn’t the thing blocking it, and it’s worth checking watch hours, Shorts views, and clearing any possible Community Guidelines strikes.
100,000 Subscriber Verification Badge
At 100,000 subscribers, a channel becomes eligible to apply for YouTube’s official channel verification badge, the grey checkmark, and qualifies for the Silver Play Button.
The verification badge also comes with more than just subscriber count requirements:
- 2-Step Verification must be turned on for the linked Google Account
- A complete channel profile (banner image, profile picture, description, and at least one public video)
- Passing YouTube’s authenticity review confirms the channel represents the real creator, brand, or entity it claims to be
YouTube is explicit that the badge itself unlocks no extra features and isn’t an award or endorsement; it’s a credibility marker distinguishing the real channel from impersonators, separate from the monetization tiers above.
The Silver Play Button is automatically awarded to eligible channels around the 100,000-subscriber mark. Past 100,000, the next hardware milestones are the Gold Play Button at 1,000,000 subscribers and the Diamond Play Button at 10,000,000.
Subscriber counts are only half of what each tier requires — the other half is watch hours or Shorts views, covered next.
Watch Hours and Shorts Views
Every monetization tier on YouTube pairs a subscriber threshold with a second, independent requirement: watch hours or Shorts views.
- 500-subscriber Early Access tier: 3,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 3 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days, plus 3 public uploads in the last 90 days.
- 1,000-subscriber Full Monetization tier: 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
- From February 1, 2027, new applicants only: 8,000 watch hours in 365 days, or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days, for Full Monetization. Existing YPP members are unaffected.
YouTube draws a line around what counts. Qualified watch hours come only from public long-form videos, including podcasts and archived livestreams. They exclude private, unlisted, or deleted videos, ad watch time, Shorts, and unarchived live streams. Qualified Shorts views must be engaged views, meaning the viewer watched past the opening seconds, with looped replays excluded.
Starting February 1, 2027, YouTube will also add an ongoing channel-activity requirement, separate from the entry thresholds above, that applies to already-monetized channels: at least 1,000 watch hours in 365 days, or 1 million Shorts views in 90 days, or 2 long videos or 5 Shorts every 90 days. Missing all three opens a 90-day grace window before monetization tools are affected.
