22 Steps to Grow from $500 to $10,000 on YouTube.pdf

YouTube is about to make a complete rehaul of monetization rules, clarifying what counts toward YPP eligibility, a full revamp of Premium Lite revenue splits, and a new threshold for monetization. Alongside that, YouTube dropped multi-language thumbnails for global creators. TikTok, meanwhile, updated how commenters can interact with their favorite creators. Here’s what changed in August.

Qualified Watch Hours and Qualified Shorts Views, Explained

YouTube published a plain-language breakdown of what qualifies as eligible views for the YouTube Partner Program after the change in how viewership is counted on your videos.

Qualified watch hours come only from public long-form videos (including podcasts) and archived livestreams. They exclude private, unlisted, or deleted videos; watch time from ads; Shorts watch hours; and unarchived live streams.

Qualified Shorts views come only from public Shorts and must be engaged views (the viewer watched past the initial seconds, with loops excluded). Creators can check engaged views per video in YouTube Analytics. Private, unlisted, or deleted Shorts, views from ads, long-form views, and image posts in the Shorts feed don’t count.

So, if you’re tracking progress toward YPP thresholds, cross-check your numbers against these exclusions: inflated raw view/watch-time counts (ad views, unarchived streams, loops) won’t move the needle on eligibility.

YouTube Multi-Language Thumbnails

YouTube is rolling out new thumbnail tools. Now, creators with access to Advanced features in their YouTube Studio can expand their reach to global audiences even further. Multi-Language Audio has already made it possible to put dubbed audio tracks on long-form and Shorts videos. Now, each language can also have its own localized thumbnail, making the viewer’s experience even smoother

At the current time, creators using multi-language audio have seen 25%+ of their total watch time from viewers all over the world. Localized thumbnails will add an additional boost.

Any creator with access to Advanced features can start using this feature for both new and existing videos.

YouTube Partner Program: 2027 Overhaul to Premium Lite, Shorts Revenue, and Entry Thresholds

We have already talked about the major changes that will hit YPP, and they’re truly huge! YouTube announced its first major changes to YPP since 2018, effective February 1, 2027. What is it going to be about?

Premium Lite Expansion

Premium Lite (ad-light, offline/backrgound viewing) is expanding to all countries with YouTube Premium. Creators earn from a dedicated revenue pool per subscription type: 30% of net revenue for Premium, 60% for Premium Lite, split 55% long-form/ 45% Shorts.

Shorts Revenue Threshold

Starting February 1, 2027, channels need 10M qualified Shorts views over the trailing 90 days to be eligible for ads and subscription revenue sharing on Shorts specifically. Channels below that stay in YPP and keep earning on long-form content; Shorts revenue sharing resumes automatically once a channel crosses 10M views again. YouTube says creators already earning significant Shorts revenue are unlikely to be affected.

New Incentive Programs

For channels below the 10M-view Shorts threshold, YouTube is introducing non-ad-revenue-earning paths. They include bonuses tied to YouTube Shopping, brand-deal incentives, and rewards for starting/growing trends. On that, YouTube promised more details would come soon.

New Entry Thresholds for YPP

New creators applying to YPP will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20M qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, which is twice as much as the current 4,000 hours/ prior Shorts threshold. Fan Funding and Shopping entry thresholds are unchanged.

This doesn’t affect creators already in YPP! However, existing YPP members need to review and sign the new terms in YouTube Studio before January 31, 2027.

For creators:

  • If Shorts is a meaningful revenue line, track your trailing-90-day qualified Shorts views against the 10M threshold now; falling below it after Feb 1, 2027 pauses Shorts monetization (not the whole channel) until you cross back over
  • Channels below the threshold should watch for the new Shopping/brand-deal/trend incentive programs as an alternative Shorts monetization path
  • The steep jump in entry requirements (4,000 → 8,000 hours) raises the bar meaningfully for creators not yet in YPP, so now is the time to create and enter the program before the bar gets higher

YouTube Shopping Adds Amazon as an Affiliate Partner

Amazon has joined the YouTube Shopping Affiliate Program. Eligible U.S. creators can now tag Amazon products directly in Shorts, long-form videos, and livestreams, which will give viewers an in-video path to purchase.

For creators, this significantly widens the product catalog available for affiliate tagging beyond existing YouTube Shopping partners: relevant for review, unboxing, and recommendation-style channels already doing affiliate content elsewhere (e.g., Amazon Associates links in descriptions) that could consolidate into native tagging.

TikTok Comments Get Voice Messages, Polls, and Photo Carousels

TikTok has rolled out a set of comment-section upgrades. It builds on existing text, photo, and video sticker comments, which is a feature set that already drives over 1,7B comments a day on the platform.

Voice Comments

Users can record and post audio comments up to 60 seconds long by tapping the microphone icon in the comment box, and anyone can tap in to listen. Rolling out globally over the next month to accounts 18 and older.

Comment Polls

Creators can add a poll (up to 5 options, custom voting window) when commenting on their own video, letting followers vote directly on decisions: outfit picks, video ideas, etc. Results track live in the comment section. The feature is available globally now!

Photo Carousel and Live Photos

Commenters can attach up to 9 photos in a single comment instead of just one. On a similar note, commenters can also upload Live Photos from their camera roll. Both features are available globally now!

For creators:

  • Comment Polls turn the comment section into a low-effort way to drive engagement
  • Voice Comments and Live Photo Comments raise the ceiling on how expressive a reply can be, worth pinning or responding to standout voice/photo comments to encourage more of them once live on your account
  • Photo Carousel Comments give fans a way to submit richer reactions (e.g., their own trip photos on a travel video)

What to Do in August?

  • Pull your trailing-90-day qualified Shorts views and check them against the 10M threshold now; you have until February 1, 2027, but the earlier you know where you stand, the more runway you have to adjust
  • If you're not yet in YPP, prioritize getting in before the entry bar doubles (4,000 → 8,000 qualified watch hours, or up to 20M qualified Shorts views)
  • If you're already a YPP member, calendar the new-terms sign-off in YouTube Studio, due before January 31, 2027
  • If you have Advanced features access, turn on multi-language thumbnails alongside multi-language audio; creators already using dubbed audio see 25%+ of watch time from international viewers, and localized thumbnails should add to that
  • If you're a US creator doing affiliate content, check your eligibility for YouTube Shopping and start tagging Amazon products natively instead of routing through description links
  • Test a Comment Poll on your next TikTok video; it's a zero-friction way to drive engagement and signal audience input
  • Watch for Voice Comments and Live Photo Comments on your videos as they roll out, and pin/respond to standout ones to encourage more
  • Prompt fans to use Photo Carousel Comments where it fits the content (travel, hauls, before/after)

Across both platforms, August's changes point in the same direction: YouTube is tightening who gets paid and how, while opening new doors for creators willing to adapt.

For creators, the throughline is preparation. The YPP entry bar is about to double, Shorts revenue now rewards sustained reach over one-off virality, and localized thumbnails and native shopping tags favor creators already thinking beyond their home market.
