How to Get Rid of YouTube Strikes?

For over a decade, AIR Media-Tech has helped creators restore access to their YouTube channels after hacks, policy violations, and platform errors. We've worked with thousands of channels and in every case, we've seen the same pattern: time is critical, and accuracy matters.

Now that YouTube has tightened its recovery processes and increased automation in how it responds to suspicious activity, understanding how to act fast and correctly has never been more important.

This is your 3-step plan for a hacked YouTube channel: the exact process that thousands of creators have followed with our guidance to recover access, restore monetization, and regain control over their channels.

Step 1: Recover Access to Your Google Account

So, what to do if a YouTube channel is hijacked? The first step is regaining access to the Google account associated with your YouTube channel. Without this, you will not be able to appeal or communicate with YouTube about the status of your channel.

To initiate the recovery, go through Google’s official process.

What matters most at this stage:

  • Use the same device, browser, and IP address you've used previously to log into the account.
  • Be ready to provide your last remembered password, recovery email, linked phone number, and answers to security questions.
  • Do not attempt the process from a VPN or an unknown device, as it may trigger additional restrictions.

If you succeed, Google will notify you that access has been restored. If your YouTube channel was removed as a result of the hijack, this recovery will also unlock the next critical step: appealing the channel deletion.

Step 2: Appeal the Channel Deletion (If the Channel Was Removed)

In most hijacking cases, attackers use the channel to publish content that violates YouTube’s Community Guidelines or spam policies. This often results in automatic takedowns by YouTube’s enforcement systems.

Once you have access to the Google account, you will receive an email with instructions for appealing the channel removal. The appeal must be submitted through YouTube’s official form.

Important considerations:

  • The appeal must be submitted from the recovered Google account. If you have not completed Step 1, this form will not function.
  • Appeals that lack detail or context are typically rejected. Focus on clarity, not emotion.
  • If the form does not open due to access issues, and you are an AIR partner, we can validate the account and request that YouTube unlock access to the form on your behalf.

While the form is designed to allow direct communication between YouTube and the channel owner, many creators find themselves facing long delays or automated responses. That brings us to the third and most critical support option.

Step 3: Involve AIR’s Hacking Protection Team

For AIR partners, the Hacking Protection service offers consultative, hands-on guidance through every step of YouTube hacked account recovery, and in many cases, we can accelerate the process by working directly with YouTube support.

Here’s how AIR’s Hacking Protection works:

#1. Validation and сase сonfirmation.

We confirm that the person reaching out is the original channel owner. In some cases, even the AIR Partner Dashboard can be compromised. We verify all contact points before proceeding.

#2. Communication support.

If the standard appeal form is inaccessible, we confirm the email associated with the channel through our internal contacts at YouTube to help restore access to the appeal tools.

#3. Security protocol guidance.

We walk you through mandatory system cleaning steps, including full antivirus checks and, in many cases, complete OS reinstallation, to prevent re-hijacking after the recovery is complete.

#4. Direct case escalation.

If your recovery process has stalled, we can escalate your hacked account case to YouTube support by confirming the hack and communicating directly with the platform’s recovery team. While YouTube now prefers to communicate directly with creators in most situations, we can support the process, help you avoid errors, and ensure your case receives proper visibility.

For non-partners, we provide consultative assistance, explaining where to go, what to write, and what documentation to prepare for recovery.

Don’t wait until something goes wrong.

Implement the security steps today. And if it’s already happened: act fast, stay precise, and reach out.

Checklist: Damage Control

Recovering your channel is only the first step. What many creators don’t realize is that post-recovery missteps can lead to re-hijacks, permanent content loss, or even demonetization due to residual violations left by hackers.

Here’s what you must do immediately after your account is restored:

#1. Audit content and channel activity:

  • Check if any livestreams, videos, or community posts were published during the hijack.
  • Look for hidden or deleted videos and restore anything that was affected.
  • Review YouTube Studio’s “Copyright” and “Monetization” tabs for new strikes.

#2. Check for policy violations or warnings:

  • Go to YouTube Studio → Dashboard → Channel Violations
  • If there are violations caused by the hacker, contact YouTube via support to clarify that the activity occurred during unauthorized access.

#3. Update all credentials:

  • Change your Google password again (even if you’ve just recovered it).
  • Revoke access to all third-party apps or tools you do not recognize.
  • Recheck your two-step verification and recovery email/phone number.

#4. Communicate with your audience:

Let your viewers know the situation. This protects your reputation and helps explain any unusual content or disruptions in your posting schedule.

Something simple would work just fine:

“Hey everyone, quick update.
Our channel was recently compromised due to a security breach. We’ve worked hard with support teams to fully recover access, and everything is now back under control.

If you noticed any unusual content, livestreams, or activity that wasn’t us. We’ve taken all the necessary steps to secure the channel and prevent this from happening again.

Thanks for your support and patience. New content is coming soon.”

You may post it on your community tab, Instagram Stories, or YouTube video description to explain the situation transparently.

And now, let’s look at how you can protect your channel from being hijacked in the first place:

Best Practices: How to Prevent Hijacking

While AIR can help recover a hijacked channel & do some damage control, prevention is always faster, safer, and significantly less disruptive. Most successful hijacks happen through creator mistakes: clicking on malicious links, running unverified software, or failing to secure access credentials.

Below are critical steps every creator should follow to reduce the risk of compromise:

#1. Enable two-step verification (2FA).

Activate two-step verification for your Google account. This requires a second factor (usually a phone prompt or code) when logging in, making it significantly harder for attackers to access your account even if they know your password.

→ Here’s a step-by-step plan:

  1. Sign in to your Google Account.
  2. Go to Security & sign-in settings.
  3. Under "How you sign in to Google," choose “Turn on 2-Step Verification”.
  4. Follow the prompts to complete the setup.

#2. Add recovery phone and email.

Having updated recovery information ensures you can quickly reset your password or regain access if you’re locked out. Ensure these are connected and up-to-date.

→ Here’s how to add a recovery phone:

  1. Sign in to your Google Account.
  2. In the left-hand menu, click Personal info.
  3. Under Contact info, select Phone → Set up.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your recovery phone number.

→ And an email:

  1. Under Contact info, select Email.
  2. Find Recovery email and click Add recovery email. You may be asked to sign in again.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

#3. Complete Google’s security checkup weekly.

Use Google’s Security Checkup tool weekly to review:

  • Devices that recently accessed your account
  • Apps with access to your Google data
  • Security alerts or unauthorized activity

#4. Audit channel permissions.

Go to YouTube Studio → Settings → Permissions. Review all users with access to your channel. Remove any old or unknown accounts.

If you work with a team, assign the lowest necessary access level (Viewer or Editor). Avoid giving Admin access unless absolutely necessary.

#5. Use a strong, unique password.

Create a password with a minimum of 12 characters, combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not reuse passwords across services.

Avoid using:

  • Your channel name
  • Your personal name
  • Dates of birth or easily guessable words

#6. Install Google password alert.

Add Google’s official extension, Password Alert, to Chrome. It will warn you if your YouTube password is being entered on a non-Google site, preventing many phishing attacks.

#7. Be cautious with sponsorship files.

We’re seeing more cases where scammers pose as brand representatives and offer paid advertising. They are often asked to download a “brief,” “press kit,” or “presentation” file that installs malware.

To "start the collaboration," they send archives with dangerous files (such as *.js, *.exe, *.vbs, etc.). Once opened, these files encrypt your computer’s data.

If the sender asks you to:

  • “Enable content”
  • “Enable macros”
  • Or install third-party software

Assume it’s a scam & err on the side of caution.

🔒 Stay Safe:

  • Do not click on unknown links or download suspicious files.
  • Always verify who you're communicating with (email, username, contacts).
  • Never share your passwords or access to your channel.
  • Enable two-factor authentication for added security.

Check out the article “How to Strengthen Your Google Account Security” for all the important tips.

If your account has been compromised, we recommend reading YouTube’s “What to Do If Your Account is Hacked” guide.

#8. Only trust emails from verified domains.

YouTube and Google will never ask for your password. Official support emails will come from:

  • @youtube.com
  • @google.com

Never submit sensitive data or passwords via form links in emails or DMs unless confirmed as official.

#9. Keep software updated.

Old browser or operating system versions are more vulnerable. Set your OS, browser, and antivirus software to update automatically.

AIR Case Studies: How We’ve Helped Creators Recover Their Channels

Here are examples from real recovery cases we've managed through Hacking Protection:

Case 1: 14M+ Family Channel Hijacked

Heidi y Zidane

One of Heidi y Zidane’s channels was hacked. AIR Media-Tech assisted in restoring the channel by guiding the creator through all necessary procedures:

  • We validated the partner’s identity and account status
  • Confirmed the channel directly with YouTube support
  • Access to the appeal process was restored manually

Result: Despite the challenges, we successfully recovered the channel in just a few days.

Case 2: Hijacked in the Middle of the Night

On December 31 at 1 a.m., another partner called us with a problem: their channel had been stolen by scammers.

Resolution:

  • We confirmed the hijack with YouTube’s team
  • Implemented an emergency plan for hacked creators
  • Partner followed our OS reset protocol

Result: An hour and a half later, the channel was returned to its owner. In the Personal Manager evaluation form, the partner left this comment:

"The AIR team helped me regain access to my channel at 2 a.m. That, in my opinion, says it all! Thank you."

Case 3: Brickmine Lost Access Overnight

The Brickmine channel (237K+ subs) was hacked, leading to a loss of access. AIR Media-Tech stepped in to help restore the channel, providing guidance and support throughout the recovery process.

Resolution:

  • Contacted YouTube to verify and restore access to the appeal form
  • Guided the creator through the correct appeal messaging

Result: With our support, the channel was successfully recovered within a few days, allowing the creator to regain control and continue producing content.
