There is no single best time to post on YouTube, and our data shows why the stock answer, “post Tuesday at 2 PM,” is close to useless. Across 31,852 videos, the gap between the best and worst day of the week is only 21% once you pool the whole platform. Your niche is where the real difference lives.
We read the real YouTube Analytics of 301 channels AIR Media-Tech works with: 31,852 long-form videos published across 2025, sorted by the exact day and hour each one went live. This article gives you the best day and hour for each of 12 niches, a day-by-hour heatmap you can screenshot, how much your posting day is worth, what video length pays best, and a retention check so you don’t chase a slot that pulls empty views. Every time is in UTC, so convert it to where your own audience lives.
Worth Knowing Upfront
- Your niche decides almost everything. The best day is worth +379% in Kids & Teens and just +34% in Transport. Same platform, but the game is completely different.
- The day of the week is a small platform-wide lever. Friday beats Sunday by only 21% once every niche is pooled. The day matters far less than the guides claim.
- Creators crowd the wrong hours. 04:00 UTC takes 12% of all uploads and returns roughly average views; 12:00 UTC draws under 4% of uploads and runs about 40% above normal.
- Length changes the payoff, not the day. A 20–60 minute video pulls a median 7,336 views; past an hour that drops to 3,162 and retention falls to 16%.
- High views can hide weak retention. Lifestyle peaks on Sunday on just 17.7% retention, one of the lowest reads in the study. That is reach without watch time.

Why There’s No Single Best Time to post on YouTube
The platform-wide day pattern is nearly flat. Friday is the best day for mid-size channels at a 5,120 median views, Sunday the worst at 4,234, a gap of just 21% across the whole week. A blanket “post Friday” rule moves a typical channel by almost nothing.
The signal lives in your niche.
A Kids channel that nails its best day sees close to five times the views of one that gets it wrong. An Education channel can post almost any weekday and land in the same band. Generic advice averages those two together and hands both creators the same rule, which fits neither of them. Your niche sets how much the day matters; your audience’s timezone sets the hour.
How Much Your Posting Day is Worth
For each niche we measured the gap between its best and worst day of the week. The range is huge.

Best day vs worst day, median views, mid-size channels. Red = timing is a major lever; light blue = minor.
Timing is a real lever for some niches and background noise for others. Kids & Teens swings +379% between its best and worst day. Lifestyle swings +245%. For those creators, the posting day is one of the cheapest ways to add views.
At the other end, Education & Science (+35%), Transport (+34%) and Entertainment (+37%) barely react, because their audiences show up on their own schedule. For them the day is a rounding error next to the content.
So the first question isn’t “what’s the best day” but “does the day even matter for me?”
If you sit in a high-sensitivity niche, treat your posting day as a real lever and protect the good slots. If you sit in a low-sensitivity one, stop agonising over it and put that energy into the video.
Not sure how much your timing is costing you?
Your niche sets how much the day matters; where you land inside it depends on your own audience’s clock and habits. AIR’s strategists have mapped this across 3,000+ channels and can read it for yours. → Find your window.
Best Day of the Week to Post on YouTube
Friday, if you want one answer for the whole platform. It is the strongest single day for mid-size channels, and Sunday is the weakest. But the whole week sits inside a 21% band, and retention barely moves day to day, which tells you the day changes how many people arrive, not how long they stay.

The Best Time to Post: Day × Hour Heatmap
Each cell compares a day-and-hour slot to what that niche normally does, so high-view niches like Kids don’t wash out the rest: 1.0 is a typical slot, and the darker the cell, the harder that slot beats normal. Hours are UTC.

Views relative to each niche's normal, mid-size channels. White cells are low-sample slots we don't trust.
The bright band runs roughly 02:00–13:00 UTC, with repeat hotspots around 05:00, 12:00 and the Friday evening 22:00 UTC slot. For a US audience that covers late evening through mid-morning Eastern, which is exactly when people wind down or start their day. The strongest individual slots:

Creators Crowd the Wrong Hours
Where creators upload and where views land are two different clocks. Mid-size creators pile into 03:00–08:00 UTC. The single busiest hour, 04:00 UTC, takes 12% of all uploads; 08:00 UTC takes another 10%. Yet 08:00 UTC returns almost exactly average views (a 1.03 index). Meanwhile 12:00 UTC, which draws under 4% of uploads, runs about 40% above a normal slot.

Bars: share of all uploads by hour. Red line: views vs each niche's normal. The busiest hours are not the best ones.
The hours everyone rushes to publish are not the hours that pay, so copying the crowd buys you competition without the reward. And the quieter midday-UTC and late-evening-UTC windows are worth a test in your niche, because a good slot with fewer rivals is the cheapest edge on this list.
One caution: that eye-catching 22:00 UTC spike leans heavily on Kids & Teens, so check it against your own niche first.
Views vs Retention: Don't Chase Empty Views
A slot that spikes views but tanks retention is a trap. The extra viewers arrive, leave fast, and the weak watch-time signal can work against the video. Retention barely moves across days, so this only shows up at the hour level – and the data points to specific hours.

12:00 UTC is the cleanest all-round window in the pooled data, strong on both counts, while 09:00 UTC is the one to watch – the views look great until you check who stayed. The same trap shows up niche by niche: Lifestyle on Sunday and Food & Cooking on Tuesday both spike views on weak retention. Always read the two columns together.
Getting the views but losing the watch time?
A slot that spikes views on weak retention trains the algorithm against you over time. An AIR audit separates the slots that pull real attention from the ones that just pull clicks, on your own channel. → Check my slots.
Does Video Length Change the Best Time to Post?
No – the best day stays on a weekday no matter how long the video is. We split all 31,852 videos into four length bands, and the timing pattern held: every band peaks on a weekday, Thursday or Friday, and none flips to the weekend. What length changes is not the day but how much any slot is worth.
Median views climb from short videos up to a peak in the 20–60 minute band, then fall off past an hour. Retention drops the whole way, from about 30% on short videos to 16% on hour-plus ones.

The 20–60 minute band is the balance point: the most median views while retention still holds near a quarter of the video. The 60 min+ band is the one to question. It is the single most-published band, a quarter of all uploads, yet it lands the fewest median views and holds only 16% of the audience. A lot of creators pour the most effort into the format that, on median, pays back the least.
Pick your length for the content, not the clock, because the best day barely moves. Just know a mid-length video walks into a slot worth more views than an hour-long one, with an audience far more likely to stay.
What’s The Best Time to Post on YouTube by Niche?
Each niche reads on its own terms: the best day, the prime hours, the video length that fits it, how the weekend compares, and whether the best day holds attention or just pulls a crowd. Best Time to Post Gaming Videos: Tuesday, Kept Short

Post gaming videos on Tuesday. It is the clear best day in the niche, ahead of the weakest by +127%, one of the wider swings in the study, so the slot you choose moves real numbers. Views cluster around 12:00 (07:00 ET / 04:00 PT), morning on the US East coast, when players open the app for fresh uploads. Monday is the day to skip, and weekends run about 20% above the weekday median, so the Saturday habit is real even though Tuesday edges it.

Length is the other half of the story. A 3–10 minute highlight or quick fix pulls a median near 8,700 views, more than double the 20–60 minute band, because that is what the viewer came for. Retention barely shifts across the week, sitting in the low twenties, so the day buys reach rather than watch time.
Gaming also rewards volume, which is rare. Posting 20 to 40 times a month lifts a channel here rather than burning it out, as our posting-frequency study confirms.
Book Tuesday for your biggest upload, keep it under ten minutes, and run one Saturday test to see whether your audience leans harder into the weekend than the median does.
When to Post Entertainment Videos (the Day Barely Matters)

Entertainment is one of the niches where the posting day hardly moves the result. Friday holds the highest baseline at a 10,636 median, but most weekdays sit in the same range and the best-to-worst gap is only +37%. The strongest hour, 13:00 (08:00 ET / 05:00 PT), is a mild preference rather than a rule, and Thursday is the one genuinely soft day.

Because the clock is close to neutral here, the packaging is what decides the video. Retention sits mid-pack at 26.0% and length stays loose, so the thumbnail and the first thirty seconds carry far more weight than any slot, which is where our title research keeps finding the gains.
Spend on the thumbnail and the opening thirty seconds rather than the schedule. The one calendar rule worth keeping is to steer clear of a Thursday drop.
Best Time to Post Educational Videos: Any Weekday, Ideally Friday

With Education you can post on almost any weekday and pay little penalty. The niche has the flattest curve we measured, +35% from the best day to the worst, and the highest retention by a wide margin at 36.1%. People search for a topic and watch it through whenever they find it, so a Friday upload and a Tuesday one land close together.

Much of the traffic is evergreen, which is why the day matters so little: the publish slot fades within days while search keeps feeding views for months. Length is the real decision. The 20–60 minute band pulls the most views and holds attention, matching the explainers and lectures people sit down to finish, while both slip past an hour.
In addition, education earns more per view than any niche in our monetization data, over four times the all-niche median RPM, because a patient audience that finishes long videos is what advertisers pay for. You can find the full ranking here.
Pick whatever weekday suits your production schedule, publish in the 20–60 minute range, and build each topic around search demand so it keeps earning long after upload day.
Best Time to Post Music on YouTube: Friday

Music rewards the Friday release the industry has run on for decades. Friday leads on both views and retention (27.1%) here, and with 66 channels behind it this is the most reliable read in the study. Views peak around 04:00 (23:00 ET / 20:00 PT), timing carries real weight at +99% between the best day and the worst, and Sunday is the day that drops on both counts.

Track length decides retention. A single song or clip in the 3–10 minute band holds close to 50%, the strongest length read anywhere in the study, while full albums and hour-long mixes fall to roughly 15%. Weekdays beat weekends by about 27%, one of the widest weekday leans we found. Per-video views look modest only because music channels publish constantly, so the right day compounds across a heavy calendar.
Release on Friday to ride the industry’s own release-day traffic, keep each cut short enough to be watched whole, and keep Sunday off the schedule.
Best Time to Post Food Videos: Tuesday, but Retention Comes First

Tuesday is the best day to post a recipe, ahead of the worst by +41%, and Food is one of the niches that holds up on weekends, running about 8% above the weekday median because that is when people cook. Views peak around 08:00 (03:00 ET / 00:00 PT), and Thursday is the day to avoid.

Food posts one of the lowest retention reads in the study, just 12.0% even on its best slot, so a recipe can rack up views while most people leave before the method. That makes the first fifteen seconds the real battleground. Put the finished dish and the one step that matters up front, before the audience drifts to another tab.
Open on the finished dish and the make-or-break step inside fifteen seconds, post on Tuesday, and judge the video on retention before view count.
Best Time to Post Fitness Videos: Thursday Morning

Publish fitness content on Thursday, early in the morning around 11:00 (06:00 ET / 03:00 PT), which lines up with a before-work training slot for a US audience. The best day runs +51% over the worst, weekdays and weekends come out about even, and Wednesday is the soft spot.

Set a recurring Thursday-morning slot for a tight, structured routine and leave it there. The day here is worth deciding once, not revisiting every week.
Best Time to Post Lifestyle Videos: Sunday, with One Catch

Lifestyle peaks hard on Sunday, which roughly triples the reach of a weak day and makes this the second most timing-sensitive niche in the study at +245%. Sunday reaches a 4,534 median. One quirk is worth flagging: Saturday is the weakest day of the whole week, so the peak is Sunday specifically and not the weekend broadly.

The catch is retention. That Sunday spike lands on just 17.7%, so the crowd arrives and drifts off fast, and if watch time sinks under it an earlier weekday slot may serve the same video better. The 20–60 minute band carries the best views and retention in the niche.
Reach without watch time is thin ground to build a business on. Small, tightly targeted Lifestyle channels out-earn bigger ones per view in our monetization data, so audience quality beats raw reach here.
Publish on Sunday for the reach, then pull the retention graph the next morning. If the Sunday crowd bails early, move that video to an earlier weekday and compare.
Best Time to Post Craft Videos: Wednesday, and Go Long

Midweek is the sweet spot for craft videos. Wednesday is the peak, Tuesday the day to skip, and the best-to-worst spread is +92%, with views clustering around 02:00 (21:00 ET / 18:00 PT). Weekends hold up too, since that is when people settle in for a project.

Crafting rewards length like few niches do. A complete walk-through is the format here, not a risk, which cuts against the usual short-video advice. More on that is in our recent study, where DIY and crafting hold their strongest engagement at the longest formats.
Publish the full build midweek, Wednesday for choice, and resist trimming it. The payoff in this niche is the finished result, and that needs the runtime.
Best Time to Post Car & Transport Videos: Tuesday

Tuesday is transport’s best day, but only just: the best-to-worst gap is a slim +34%, among the mildest in the study, so the day is the last thing to fuss over. Sunday is the weakest, weekdays run about 15% ahead, and views peak around 00:00 (19:00 ET / 16:00 PT).

Transport is the only niche where the 60-minute-plus band tops the chart, pulling the most views and holding around 40% retention, the strongest long-form read we found, as viewers settle into long car, aviation and build content. Going long pays twice: transport is the second best-earning niche per view in our monetization data and carries the most ad slots of any niche, because an hour-long video leaves room for several mid-rolls.
Put your effort into one long, well-built video rather than the schedule. A 60-minute-plus piece dropped on a Tuesday is this niche’s single strongest play.

If you post one Kids video a week, make it Friday. No niche depends on the day more: the swing from Friday to the worst day is +379%, the widest in the study by a distance. Friday reaches a 36,402 median with healthy 29.5% retention, views peak around 23:00 (18:00 ET / 15:00 PT), early evening on the US East coast, and Wednesday, the worst day, is one to avoid by a wide margin.

Retention holds steady across the week, so the day is purely about how many kids show up. Aim for the 10–20 minute band, which out-pulls both shorter clips and longer content for an audience with a short attention span that still wants more than a two-minute video.
Treat Friday as non-negotiable for your key release, aim for 10–20 minutes, and never bury a big upload on a Wednesday, given how far the day swings here.
Best Time to Post Tech Videos: Wednesday

Wednesday looks like the best day at +74%, views peak around 00:00 (19:00 ET / 16:00 PT), and the weekday lean is strong at about 38%. However, read the timing for tech loosely, because the niche rests on six channels and a couple of large ones pull the median up.

Best Time to Post Business Videos: Friday (Working-Week Audience)

Business videos do best inside the working week, and on our five-channel sample Friday leads. The figures are directional, but they line up: weekdays run about 30% ahead of weekends, Sunday is the weakest, the swing looks large at +185%, and views peak around 07:00 (02:00 ET / 23:00 PT) with retention healthy at 29.0%.

Where this niche stands apart is length. Business & Finance posts the highest engagement of any niche at the 1–2 hour mark, the long explainers and market breakdowns viewers treat as work. Confirm the day on your own analytics, then commit to long-form.
Post into the working week, Friday for choice, commit to long explainers over short clips, and confirm the day on your own analytics before building a routine on five channels.
When to Post News Videos
News is the one niche where the posting day barely applies. Performance tracks events, not the day of the week, so the calendar matters less here than anywhere else we measured. When something happens, that is your window. The niche sits below our reliability line at three channels, so we don’t publish a fixed slot for it.
Skip the weekly calendar here. Publish the moment a story breaks, and go live when you can to hold the first wave of attention while it is still building.
Six Rules Worth Keeping
- Your niche decides how much timing matters. Kids & Teens (+379%) and Lifestyle (+245%) nearly multiply their views on the right day; Education (+35%) and Transport (+34%) barely move. Know which camp you’re in before you touch your schedule.
- The day of the week is a small lever. Platform-wide it’s a 21% swing, Friday over Sunday. Your audience’s timezone is the bigger lever.
- Don’t copy the crowd. Mid-size creators jam into 03:00–08:00 UTC, but the quieter 12:00 UTC window runs about 40% above normal. Test the empty hours.
- Read retention next to views. 09:00 UTC pulls views but loses watch time; 12:00 UTC wins on both. A view-trap slot is worse than a quiet one.
- Length changes the payoff, not the day. the best day is a weekday at every length, but a 20–60 minute video pulls the most median views while an hour-plus video lands the fewest and holds only 16% retention.
- Start from your audience’s clock. UTC is where the data lives, not where your audience is. Convert every slot before you schedule.
The Slot Your Channel Is Missing
Averages describe a niche. Your channel has its own audience and its own geography, and the best slot for it may sit an hour off the niche median.
That’s what an audit is for. AIR’s strategists have run this read on more than 3,000 channels, using the same day, hour and retention data you see here, one channel at a time, and found the slot that was quietly leaking views. You’ll get:
- A read of your audience geography, active hours, and how your current schedule matches them.
- A posting plan built around your niche’s timing sensitivity, not generic advice.
- A live 45–60 minute session with a senior AIR strategist to walk through it.

How We Ran This Study
The numbers come from real YouTube Analytics, not third-party estimates: 301 channels in AIR’s network, 31,852 long-form videos (180 seconds or longer) published across 2025, read straight from Studio. We recorded the day of the week and the UTC hour each video went live, then measured performance by slot.
Two limits to hold onto while you read. First, this study shows which posting times correlate with more views, not which times earn an algorithmic boost. It is correlation, not proof that the clock caused the result. Second, most of these channels have a US-heavy, English-speaking audience, so a strong UTC hour usually means “this is when that audience is awake”. That is exactly why you convert every time below to your own audience’s clock.
Slots with fewer than three videos are filtered out, and the heatmap hides thin cells. Figures are for the medium tier (100K–10M subscribers) unless noted, since it is the largest and most comparable group. Three niches rest on fewer than eight channels (Business & Finance, Gadgets & Tech and News & Politics), so read their exact numbers as directional.
