Dr Roto ran a Fantasy Sports channel on YouTube for four years, published more than 500 videos, and earned $0 from them. The channel followed all the rules. It just never got into the YouTube Partner Program, which shares ad revenue only after 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months.
An AIR audit compared the channel with four leading channels in its niche and found why all those videos weren't adding up to the watch hours YouTube asks for. The creator then spent three months putting the findings to work with their AIR channel manager. The first payout came about three months in. Today the channel earns $500 a month, and the number is growing.
The audit found the problem. A specialist helped fix it. Below are both parts, with the numbers.
Dr Roto at a glance
Niche
Fantasy Sports on YouTube
Before
4 years, 500+ videos, $0. Not in the YouTube Partner Program.
What the audit found
19 of 20 recent long-form videos under 1.2% CTR, against 4–6% for niche leaders. No Community posts, no pinned comments.
What changed
8–12 minute videos, new titles and thumbnails, reworked sound, visuals and intros, Community polls.
Who did the work
The creator and Kate, their AIR channel manager, over three months.
Result
First payout about three months in. Now $500 a month and growing. Next goal: MSN.
Why 500+ Videos Didn't Add Up to Watch Hours
We started the audit by pulling Dr Roto's own numbers against the channels winning in its niche.
The revenue picture, first: across 50 analytics exports covering 500+ videos, estimated revenue and RPM read $0 every time. Zero.
Then we benchmarked the channel against four direct competitors in Fantasy Sports on upload mix, click-through rate, and watch-time distribution:

The gap |
|
CTR on long-form (last 20 videos) |
0.00% – 1.14% on 19 of 20 videos |
4% – 6% |

2–9 of 165–330 videos (1–3%) |

|
Community engagement |
Zero Community posts, zero pinned comments on any stream |
Almost none: all four leaders skip polls and pinned comments too |
Viewers had no reason to come back between uploads, and no competitor was giving them one |
Dr Roto's Shorts show the watch-hour problem best. In the audit's data, next to the channel's long-form videos found through Browse, Shorts brought about 91% of the views and only about 6% of the watch hours. Watch hours are what the YouTube Partner Program counts. Dr Roto kept Shorts anyway, as a way to reach new viewers before the August football season.
Two findings mattered more than the rest:
- The titles were written for an existing audience, not a search engine. "The Fight Club of Pain Presents." "The Hard Hits Review." Fine if you already know the show. Invisible if you're typing "NFL Week 8 DraftKings picks" — which is what this exact audience types, and what competitors' titles were built to catch instead.
- The channel gave viewers no reason to come back between uploads. No Community posts. No pinned comments, even on streams with real chat activity while they were live. Fantasy sports news changes by the hour, with injuries and lineup swaps, and polls work well with this audience. Almost no channel in the niche was using them, so the spot was open.

Dr Roto's result didn't come from reading a report and executing alone. The audit gave the channel a ranked list of fixes. The results came from the three months after it, when the creator worked through that list with Kate, their AIR channel manager.
The audit ranks every recommendation by effort against projected impact. These three came out on top:
|
Priority fix |
Projected impact |
|
Shift production toward a focused 8–12 minute format |
Cuts time to YouTube Partner Program eligibility 2–3x |
|
Rebuild titles and thumbnails around live-slate search terms |
Lifts targeted long-form views 50–100% within 30 days |
|
Launch a Community tab built around polls |
Gives viewers a reason to return between uploads |
Over those three months, the creator and Kate:
- Shifted to the 8–12 minute format the audit flagged as priority one
- Rebuilt titles and thumbnails, benchmarked against competitors analyzed individually for the niche
- Reworked the video itself: background, sound, on-screen graphics and the intro, to make each video more engaging
- Launched a Community tab built around polls, a format the audit flagged as underused in Fantasy Sports
- Kept Shorts in the mix on purpose, to pull in a wider audience ahead of the August football season
Dr Roto knows fantasy sports inside and out. Three months of hands-on work with an AIR specialist helped them monetize that on YouTube, after years of trying. MSN syndication is the next goal.

The audit found the fix. Turning it into $500/month took three months of applying it, together with a specialist.
If your channel isn't in the program yet, note the date. YouTube has announced that from February 1, 2027, new applicants will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, twice today's 4,000. We've broken down what else changes in the Partner Program in 2027
