Brave Wilderness: The English Auto-Dub Held 1:22 Against 5:19 on Pro Tracks

Brave Wilderness is one of the biggest wildlife channels on YouTube. With AIR, it launched 9 fully dubbed channels voiced by professional actors, which brought 370K new subscribers and 80M+ views.

When YouTube launched auto-dubbing, we tested it on one audio track of the Spanish channel and compared it with the pro-dubbed tracks on the same videos:

Even the weakest pro track, French at 3:40, held viewers almost three times longer than the auto-dub.

Italian Kids' Channel: The AI Track Dropped Average View Duration to 54 Seconds

An Italian-speaking kids' channel with more than 5 million views tested AI dubbing on its English track.

Kids' content is where a weak voice costs the most. Children leave when a voice sounds flat or too adult, and when AI-dubbed tracks start pulling down the average view duration on your main channel, it can send the wrong signals to the algorithm.

Serbian Channel: From 7:13 to 0:43 on an English AI Track

This channel has more than 10 localized versions. On its Serbian channel, the team tested AI dubbing for the English track.

The pro-dubbed German track kept most of the original's watch time. The AI track lost almost all of it.

What the Three Cases Have in Common

• The AI track was English every time. For channels whose original language isn't English, English is often the only language YouTube's auto-dubbing offers (YouTube Help), so it's also the first AI track most of them try.
• The pro tracks held up across very different markets. Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Bulgarian, French, and German all stayed within minutes of each other.
• The gap grew with the length and depth of the content. The channel with the longest views, at 7:13, lost the most on its AI track.

AI dubbing can show you where the demand is, but in these three channels, only real voices kept the viewers who came.

Where AI Dubbing Still Helps

AI dubbing works as a test balloon: it shows which markets want your content before you pay for voice actors. Retention results also differ by language.
