how to make money on youtube shorts

Short videos have been a big hit with the social media audience. You might think we're talking about TikTok or Instagram, but we're talking about YouTube Shorts. So just how much money can you make out of these videos? Let's have a look together.

Do YouTube Shorts Make Money

Since its launch in 2021, YouTube shorts have had an average of more than 70 billion daily views. Note that YouTube Shorts were not originally included in the YouTube Partner Programme (YPP), but now all video content can be monetized. Previously, creators could only earn money from ads in long-form videos, but now partners can earn a share of the revenue from ads that appear in the feed between YouTube short videos.

These 60-second vertical videos allow creators to earn additional revenue and increase engagement on their main YouTube channels. In this case, YouTube Shorts are more useful as a tool to increase subscribers and views on the main channel. By the way, we've just discussed the top hacks to help your video go viral and get the most views and revenue.

YouTube Shorts Monetisation Requirements

YouTube Ahorts Monetization rules 2024

Last year, creators were allowed to monetize their short films through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). If you want to join and start making money from YouTube Shorts, you need to meet certain criteria:

  • Your channel must comply with all YouTube channel monetization rules.
  • The creator must reside in the country where the program is available.
  • The creator must not have any active community violations against their channel.
  • The channel must have two-step verification and advanced features enabled.
  • The creator must have or have obtained an AdSense account.

Also, the YouTube Partner Programme offers two levels of monetization, each with different thresholds and how you can earn. To gain access to fan funding, you must have:

  • 500 subscribers, 3 publicly available videos in the last 90 days, and (one of two) 3,000 valid hours of viewing time in the last 12 months;
  • Or 3 million views of Shorts in the last 90 days.

Creators can earn advertising revenue (including YouTube Shorts) and revenue from YouTube Premium subscribers in addition to fan funding. To do this, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Accumulate either 1,000 subscribers or 10 million Shorts views within the last 90 days.
  • Or accumulate either 1,000 subscribers or 4,000 hours of public views of your long-form videos on your main channel.

YouTube Shorts Average Revenue

The amount you can earn from short videos ranges from $0.01 to $0.06 per 1,000 views. As you can see, this amount is much lower than the amount you can earn from long-form videos on the channel. Long-form YouTube videos can earn between $1.61 and $29.30 per 1,000 views, with an average of $1.25 to $2.5.

So it's going to be quite hard to make money from shorts unless you're getting hundreds of millions of views a month. This begs the logical question: why make YouTube Shorts at all? These types of shorts can help you significantly increase engagement on your main channel, as well as subscribers and views for other videos. In this way, you can increase the revenue of your YouTube channel and start making money from YouTube short films at the same time.

How to Monetize YouTube Shorts: Recommendations

If you're fired up about creating YouTube Shorts and generating income, you need to follow all the rules mentioned above. However, apart from them, we can provide some useful recommendations:

  • Expand your audience: сreate engaging, high-quality short films that engage viewers and inspire them to subscribe to your channel. Expand your monetization opportunities through other channels by increasing your subscriber base.

  • Partnerships and sponsorships: brands and advertisers are interested in partnering with creators who have a large number of subscribers on YouTube. Reach out to advertisers for great deals on sponsored content, advertising, and more.

  • Promote your products or services: you can use YouTube short films to promote products or services that are already a source of revenue for you. Don't forget to include links, descriptions, metatags, etc. A great way to drive traffic to your website or shop.

  • Channel Memberships and Super Chats: if you are a member of the YouTube Partner Program and also have access to Channel Memberships and Super Chats during live broadcasts, you can use these opportunities to indirectly monetize your shorts. Convince viewers to become channel members or send super chats during live shorts premieres to support your channel financially.

  • Drive your audience to other platforms: use short videos to promote other content, such as your website, blog, or social media presence. Encourage your viewers to visit these other platforms, where you can monetize your content.

As you can see, there are several ways to monetize your content and to use Shorts as part of your overall content strategy. In the future, there may be additional monetization opportunities designed specifically for YouTube Shorts creators as YouTube continues to develop and expand the Shorts platform.
